The White-throated kingfisher is from the Alcedinidae family also known as the kingfisher family. It is a least concern species. The bird's average size is 28cm. It's voice is very noisy, loud and often audibile over crowded urban areas. It has a red beak and a white chin in color. The head of the bird is brown. The upperside of the wing is blue, black, white and the underside of the wing is black and white (mostly black). Its legs are red and its claws are black. The upperside of the body is blue and the underside in white and brown in color. 



This species of kingfisher mostly eats insects, earthworms, rodents, snakes, fish and frogs. The kingfisher is usually found in forests, cultivation, lakes, riverside and coastal mangroves. The kingfisher was discovered in 1758 by carl lennaeus.
